What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, or HBOT, involves spending time in a pressurized chamber. At LA Ortho & Wellness, sessions take place in an O2 BOX T2-R chamber pressurized to 1.3 ATA. Oxygen-enriched air is delivered through a nasal cannula during the session.

HBOT has established medical uses for specific conditions. Its role in general orthopedic recovery, wellness, or performance is less certain and should be discussed realistically.

Where Might HBOT Fit in an Orthopedic Plan?

At LA Ortho & Wellness, HBOT may be discussed as a supportive option alongside appropriate orthopedic treatment and recovery. It does not replace a clear diagnosis, rehabilitation, or surgery when surgery is needed.

The important question is not simply whether HBOT is available. It is whether it fits your condition, health history, and goals.

What Should You Expect?

A typical session lasts about one hour. You rest inside the chamber while it is gradually pressurized. The chamber is large enough for two people, and you can watch television during the session. You may notice pressure in your ears similar to the feeling during airplane travel. The team will explain how to equalize that pressure and what to expect.

Your recommended schedule depends on why HBOT is being considered. Dr. Gelber can discuss whether it belongs in a broader treatment or recovery plan.

Is HBOT Appropriate for Everyone?

No. Health history, ear or sinus problems, lung conditions, medications, and other factors may affect whether HBOT is appropriate.

Possible effects include ear or sinus pressure, temporary vision changes, claustrophobia, and other pressure- or oxygen-related complications. A screening discussion is important before treatment.

Why Discuss HBOT With Dr. Gelber?

HBOT should not be considered in isolation from the problem you are trying to address. Dr. Gelber can evaluate the orthopedic picture and explain whether HBOT may have a supporting role—or whether your time and resources would be better directed toward another part of the plan.
