Why See Dr. Gelber Before Deciding?
You do not need to choose between an injection and surgery before you come in.
Dr. Gelber reviews your symptoms, examines your joint, looks at your imaging, and asks what you want to get back to doing. What you have already tried matters, too.
If a nonsurgical option is reasonable, he can explain why. If replacement is likely to serve you better, he will tell you that too.
The goal is to help you make a confident decision about your joint and your next step.

What Is Realistic for Your Knee?
The answer depends on what is causing your pain, how advanced the problem is, and how much it limits your life.
Your imaging helps show what is going on in the joint. Your goals help define what success would look like for you. Walking comfortably on a trip may be your priority. Someone else may want to return to tennis or longer hikes.
We also evaluate patients considering alternatives to hip or shoulder replacement, with recommendations based on the particular joint and diagnosis.
What Could a Nonsurgical Plan Include?
Rehabilitation and strength work may help improve how you move and what your joint can handle. For some patients, an injection or regenerative treatment may also be worth considering.
Regenerative Medicine Options Include:
- PRP using a concentrated portion of your own blood
- BMAC prepared from your bone marrow and cells
- MFAT uses processed tissue from a small amount of your own fat
Dr. Gelber can explain whether one is appropriate for your joint, what improvement you might reasonably expect, and what the recovery involves.
How Will We Know It Is Helping?
Pain relief matters. So does what you are getting back to doing.
At follow-up, Dr. Gelber looks at your progress toward those activities and whether strength, movement, pain or all three are still holding you back. The plan ma change as you recover.
